the door
According to Daniel Kahneman, the psychological present of any human being is about three seconds long. That means that every life contains about 600 million of such moments of ‘presence’. Within one month, there are at least 600 thousand. Most of them are completely ignored by our remembering self. They don’t leave any trace in us at all, they are lost forever. But somehow, we get the sense that they should count, that what happens during these moments of experience amounts to what we could actually call our life.
It is interesting to envision the volume of all these neglected seconds with one simple gesture. Every time the door opens, one ball falls into its internal space. How many years will it take to fill it up? What is the real number of minutes of our lives in just this simple movement? What about the rest? We cannot avoid them for sure, but we can try noticing them at least.
