the surface game

A surface is a set of an infinite number of points inaccessible to our awareness.

The idea for this work emerged from reflections on the outdated nature of many of our definitions of what is considered stable and universally accepted. It also questions the choice – whether conscious or unconscious – of entire societies to ignore the urgent need to reassess these outdated notions and principles. The Surface Game is, in part, a somewhat melancholic irony about this state of affairs. A surface that isn’t quite a surface, yet capable of imitating its function, invites viewers to look beneath it – to see what lies deeper.
Each stick is unique, playfully whimsical, and peculiar. They are sculpted using the papier-mâché technique, where the paper used consists of shredded newspapers filled with stories that once had (or still have) meaning, notes, printed work documents, blueprints, sketches, and more. No one will ever read these stories again, but for this work, it is essential to know they are there. We should be able to identify the presence of questions regarding events and circumstances that, though often unnoticed, continuously shape our lives.
